BRING ON WOBBLY BELLIES
By Lynsey Clarke
IT might be three or so decades too late, but Victoria’s Secret has finally realised that its model offering was, quite frankly, pants.
Supermodels might look amazing in embellished push-up bras and cut-out thongs at the brand’s annual show but what us women really want to see is how the underwear will look on us – with our fried-egg boobs, flat bum or wobbly belly.
The problem with Victoria’s Secret has always been that it’s about the male gaze.
The annual catwalk’s models were called Angels, and the star of the show would get to wear its Fantasy Bra. But the show was quite clearly a man’s fantasy.
I certainly don’t know many women who dream to walk around in thigh-high latex stilettos and bondage-style peekaboo pants.
Former Angels, who include Gisele Bundchen, Adriana Lima and Erin Heatherton, were said to undergo “body inspections”, go on “starvation diets”, live off powdered egg protein and exercise six times a week in order to fit the “fantasy” of a 24in waist, or less.
Until now, anyone who didn’t fit the mould wouldn’t get a look in.
Even Gigi Hadid, who has appeared on the cover of Vogue 35 times, got turned down after auditioning for the show in 2014, before eventually earning her wings two years later.
But thankfully, Victoria’s Secret has taken a long, hard look at itself, in part due to CMO Ed Razek’s remark in 2018 that transgender or plus-size models were not used on its catwalk “because the show is a fantasy”.
But it is the decline in sales, thanks to the huge success of Rihanna’s inclusive Savage x Fenty lingerie, that has really forced the change.
Launched in 2018, the brand’s bras go up to size 46G and knickers to 4XL, and Rihanna has included heavily pregnant, transgender and plus-size models in her catwalks.
This is in huge contrast to a Victoria’s Secret campaign just seven years ago, where the words “The Perfect Body” were emblazoned across a poster of ten gym-honed, identikit models. It was slammed at the time for promoting unrealistic standards of beauty.
While blatantly ripping off Rihanna’s successful marketing campaign to use a diverse range of brand advisers that can speak for everyone not the few, at least Victoria’s Secret is making an effort.
All we need now is for other brands such as Victoria Beckham, Gucci and YSL to follow suit.
It’s 2021, we want to see what clobber looks like on, fat rolls and all.

Céline Portrait of a Teen Idol
Victoria’s Secret Embraces Inclusivity and Hires Its First Transgender Model
August 6, 2019
For some time now, the modeling industry has been rife with accusations from activist critics and social justice lobbies toward many of the titans of the business — from Playboy to Vogue to Victoria’s Secret — concerning the commodification of women, the promotion of impossible beauty standards and the exclusion of women of color and transwomen from the dialogue. Now, at least one positive change is being made in the right direction. Victoria’s Secret has just contracted their first transgender model.
RELATED: What You Should Know About Transgender People
This milestone follows years of lukewarm or apathetic responsiveness to the notion, with CMO Ed Razek leaving Victoria’s Secret after making transphobic remarks in a 2018 Vogue interview.
“Do I think about diversity? Yes. Does the brand think about diversity? Yes. Do we offer larger sizes? Yes. It’s like, why doesn’t your show do this? Shouldn’t you have transsexuals in the show?” Razek said in the interview. “No. No, I don’t think we should. Well, why not? Because the show is a fantasy. It’s a 42-minute entertainment special.”Now, Brazilian model Valentina Sampaio has been hired as the first transgender woman to earn her Victoria’s Secret Angel wings, and she couldn’t be happier with the news. Taking to Instagram to share a picture of herself in hair and makeup for, presumably, a hot session with the lingerie brand, Sampaio was certainly making a statement which will echo throughout the beauty and fashion business as a whole.
Sampaio also attracted a great deal of support on Instagram as well, seeing trans actress Laverne Cox and fellow Victoria’s Secret models Lais Ribeiro and Elsa Hosk show up in the comments to offer her their enthusiastic backing.
“Wow finally!” Cox exclaimed of the big step forward for the model — and for the embattled fashion brand.
Ribeiro and Hosk used various lovely emoji to make their show of support for Sampaio plain for all the world to see.
While Sampaio may be breaking ground in terms of wider public acceptance of transgender people in the modeling business, trans folk still face a great deal of discrimination and stigma. Per the 2015 U.S. Transgender Survey, 29 percent of those polled were living in poverty, and 15 percent were unemployed — both poverty and unemployment numbers falling well above the national average.
Perhaps even more heartbreaking, approximately 33 percent of transgender people surveyed admitted to having been homeless at one point or another. That’s to say nothing of a strikingly problematic suicide rate — 40 percent of all persons who identified as trans had tried to take their own life at one point, which is nearly 10 times the average rate.
With Geena Rocero having posed for gentlemen’s magazine Playboy in 2019 — openly trans all the while — and Sampaio now making headlines, it looks like the future is at least a little bit brighter for those transgendered individuals looking to make a lifestyle (and perhaps a career) in the modeling biz.

After causing outrage at the end of 2018, when chief marketing officer Ed Razek claimed trans women were not part of the labelвЂs вЂfantasyвЂ, VictoriaвЂs SecretВ has seemingly finally realised weвЂre living in 2019 and hired its first trans model.В
Brazilian model Valentina SampaioВ took to Instagram to share behind-the-scenes photographs and a video of herself on a shoot for the brandвЂs younger Pink line, in a post accompanied by the caption “Never stop dreaming”. Sampaio is no stranger to making history, after she became the first trans woman to coverВ VogueВ Paris back in 2017 and appeared in the Brazilian edition a year later.В
The news comes after it was revealed there will be no televised VictoriaвЂs Secret show this year after viewing stats fell to an all time lowВ last year, and established Angels Karlie KlossВ and Lily AldridgeВ railed against RazekвЂs comments via Instagram, which were originally published in an interview with VogueВ ahead of the 2018 runway show.В
Soon after, Kloss gave up her wings, explaining to VogueВ that the brandвЂs values no longer aligned with her own: “I didnвЂt feel it was an image that was truly reflective of who I am and the kind of message I want to send to young women around the world about what it means to be beautiful.” В
Razek also came under fire for his comments around plus-size models, claiming that, like trans models, they too are not part of the fantasy VictoriaвЂs Secret is intent on offering up. As yet there has been no news of the inclusion of plus-size models going forward.В
While the move to feature Sampaio in its new campaign isВ a step forward for what has become a truly backwards-facing brand, we canвЂt help but feel slightly cynical about the news.
Despite a push towards inclusivity by the fashion industry, VictoriaвЂs Secret has trailed behind by continuing to offer an incredibly narrow вЂfantasy†year after year, and with Razek still at its helm (despite calls for his resignation) the decisionВ to now include a trans model on its line-up of Angels feels like an attempt to get the cash registers ringing amid falling sales as opposed to a genuine move towards diversity. In this case, you can keep your scratchy nylon knickers, VS – to us, it all feels just a little too late.

Victoria’s Secret Introduces First Black, Transgender Model
She pairs a red Victoria’s Secret corset with a black leather skirt, tights, black suede Louboutin boots, and a sleek leather coat.
While enjoying her “Valentine’s Day SINGLE Girl Edition” day out, Emira got brunch by herself, bought herself a bouquet of red roses and topped it off with a gift of diamonds for herself.
“Valentine’s Day may be about love, but it’s also about loving yourself,” Emira says before signing off.
Her VS wardrobe consisted of a red silk robe, red corset top and a pair of silky heart pajamas.
“I am so grateful to work with Victoria’s Secret and hope this paves the way for others after me,” she continued.
Victoria’s Secret has gone through a complete transformation since Ed Razek stepped down as a top executive in 2019.
The lingerie giant went from promoting an image of beauty that was highly unattainable for a vast majority of people, to promoting the “Victoria’s Secret Collective.”
Last summer, Victoria’s Secret announced it would be doing a complete overhaul of its current branding.
The company ditched the “Angel” body type and switched to promoting body types that were more inclusive and widespread.

Born in London, Paloma has an African-American mother and Chilean-Swiss father. She is one of the few size-14 models to have appeared on the cover of Vogue.
Hired for Victoria Secret’s Swim Spring 2021 collection, the shots of the curvy 29-year-old were praised by fans.

Paloma plans to use her new ambassador role to advocate for the brand’s sizing to go up to 5XL, instead of the current XXL.
She said: “I didn’t start modelling to just do all the cool stuff, I did it to change the world.”
Priyanka Chopra
As one of India’s highest-paid actresses and the wife of boyband star Nick Jonas, Priyanka has the biggest following of the VS Collective.
Also a film producer and entrepreneur, the 38-year-old, whose varied CV includes winning Miss World 2000, vows to use her new role to “develop future collections that are inclusive of all people.”

American Eagle.

Yes – this is a big deal for Victoria’s Secret after previous backlash
In 2018, the popular clothing and lingerie company faced major discrimination charges after comments made against the transgender community. In an interview for Vogue, Victoria’s Secret chief marketing officer Ed Razek said he didn’t believe their famous runway event should include transsexuals because “the show is a fantasy.” He didn’t believe transgender women were able to fulfill that “fantasy” that the other models did.
The article went viral right away and received an extremely negative reaction from many people in and out of the fashion industry.
Even the Model Alliance posted a statement of their own to Instagram about the comments by Razek. They apologized for his hurtful words and ended with the phrase, “We can and need to do better.”
Razek later apologized and back-tracked his statements in the interview by saying, “To be clear, we absolutely would cast a transgender model in our show.”
And now, here we are in 2022 – Victoria’s Secret is surely making leaps by collaborating with its first transgender and black model.
Could Emira possibly be the first black transgender angel to walk in their annual fashion show?

Victoria’s Secret / Instagram / @bluebella
Victoria’s Secret
Bye, Bye Angels… Hello Collective!
On Wednesday, June 16, ‘VS’ announced Priyanka Chopra, Megan Rapinoe and many other high profile women will be the new spokespeople for the brand’s ‘Collective’ initiative.
The Victoria’s Secret Collective, taps into a diverse array of shapes, sizes, and of course, ethnicities. This time around, they have gone a step ahead and added in the LGBTQ+ segment as well, which truly gives us hope for humankind, or at least the lingerie-loving ones.
The official Instagram account for ‘VS’ wrote, “We are proud to announce an exciting new partnership platform, #TheVSCollective, designed to shape the future of Victoria’s Secret. These extraordinary partners, with their unique backgrounds, interests and passions will collaborate with us to create revolutionary product collections, compelling and inspiring content, new internal associate programs and rally support for causes vital to women.”
Their historic rebranding comes after the brand was plagued by controversy after former Chief Marketing Officer, Razek, made transphobic and fat shaming comments.
In 2018, Razek claimed that no one wanted to see transgender or plus-size models on the show. He was asked to leave and as he did, trans model Valentina Sampaio shot for VS. And today, she is a spokesperson for the brand.
Sampaio became the first transgender woman to model for Victoria’s Secret.
The famous Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show was officially canceled on November 21, 2019. The high-profile runway show had been “in style” for 23 years. The company that owns ‘VS’, L Brands, said the decision was part of a move to “evolve the messaging of the company.”
Former Victoria’s Secret model, Tyra Banks, spoke out about the new initiative.
Tyra shared a photo from her last ever ‘VS’ runway show over 15 years ago.
She captioned the photo, “First is hard. First is lonely. But first is necessary. First is crucial so that a door can be opened for others to fit through. Within a 10 year span starting in 1995, I was the first Black @VictoriasSecret contract model ever. The first Black Victoria’s Secret Cover model. The first Black VS model to do so many other groundbreaking things with the brand – as well as other brands.”
She continued, “But after a first, must come a flow of more. A flow of different. A flow of unique. A flow so strong, a flow of so many that we LOSE COUNT. I retired from the runway 16 years ago – and I’m proud that in my lifetime, I’m witnessing a beauty revolution.”
“To the new collective of badass ROLE models, I may have cracked that door open, but y’all are charging through. Keep on keepin’ on until we all LOSE COUNT of how many are breaking through behind you. #LetsLoseCount,” Tyra concluded.
